Art club launches exhibition

Howard Kelly, owner of the Riverbend Wine and Art Gallery and art connoisseur was the evening's guest speaker.

The Art by the Sea Club of Margate opened its annual exhibition at the Margate Art Museum last Thursday.

The artists, most of whom are club members came together to enjoy a night of creativity in the visual arts sphere. In his opening address, club chairman Johan du Toit said that the club was celebrating its 50th anniversary.

Howard Kelly was a guest speaker during the club’s annual art exhibition launch.

“It’s amazing to think that the club has existed for this long and we continue to grow. It is all due to the lovely support we receive from our members, and the museum management as we celebrate another year while continuing to grow,” Mr du Toit said.

Howard Kelly, owner of the Riverbend Wine and Art Gallery and art connoisseur was the evening’s guest speaker. Every year, art pieces are nominated and judged to win awards, this year’s judge was Mr Kelly.

Artists entered various categories: Landscapes, seascapes, figures, modern art, flowers, wildlife and more, and used mediums such as oil, pastel, acrylic paint and even pencil sketches.

The winners of the recent Art by the Sea Club competition were announced at the opening of the exhibition. They are (from left) Howard Kelly (guest speaker), Rose Goddard, Andy Gardner, Judith Simpson, Graeme White, Marianna Radley, Alan Hurlbatt and club chairman Johan du Toit.

“This year’s theme was a display of the art works, we had a centre piece and we had artists do paintings in the colours of the club’s logo, but their artworks are each an individual choice. It’s safe to say that I loved each and every piece,” Mr Kelly said.

The exhibition is open to the public, and will run up until the January 15.
