Support sari drive now

This year, instead of donating all the saris, the organisation decided to use some in its sewing skills development project.

The Mid South Coast (MSC) Promise Foundation non-profit-organisation is currently running a sari (Indian garment) donation drive in an attempt to better the lives of underprivileged people in the Umdoni area.

Co-founder Nitha Haripersad said the NPO had done a lot of work for the community since its establishment a few years ago. In 2019 a similar sari drive was held with donations being made to those in need.

This year, instead of donating all the saris, the organisation decided to use some in its sewing skills development project.

“Saris will be used to teach unemployed individuals how to sew garments out of the sari material and then sell the items made,” said Haripersad.

“This will teach the individuals sewing skills as well as entrepreneurial skills to support themselves and their families.”

The NPO began the sari drive in October and already has more than 200 saris. People are encouraged to donate unwanted saris to the organisation before the end of November.
