This is one of the many prestigious awards that Vernon Govender has won.

Vernon Govender, a Port Shepstone resident has once again made the South Coast proud after winning an award at the Men of Valour Awards held in Umhlanga last month.

This was the award’s third year since inception and is a platform that provides recognition to men from different walks of life, who have excelled at fulfilling their dreams.

Vernon was one of the 10 award recipients, who were acknowledged as ongoing trailblazers, active leaders and key community players in their respective fields.

This incredible achievement adds to Vernon’s already impressive list of awards. Some of these include music awards and mayoral community awards for his participation in outreach projects.

Vernon has over the years been actively involved in community-based organisations such as the South Coast Hospice, Cancer Association of South Africa, SPCA, Reinhardt’s Place and many more.

He also went on to win an award from the Department of Health for best frontline employee and for service excellence.

Currently employed by the Department of Health, Vernon has dedicated a lot of his time to serving his community, which greatly compliments his passion for arts and culture.

In particular, Vernon has done a lot of groundwork in uplifting the local Indian community. He has played a pivotal role in fundraising towards the renovation of the Muthu Mariamam Kovil. This is one of the oldest Indian temples in Port Shepstone and is situated along the Mzimkhulu River.

In addition, he has served as a chairman for the Port Shepstone Hindu Cultural Federation for four years, with the primary focus on hosting wonderful Diwali shows for the community to enjoy.

At present, Vernon conducts services within the community either in Tamil, Hindi or Telegu for prayers and ceremonies. He is also involved in his own temple that he built, the Siva Shakthi Alayam.

His passion and dedication to the local community has seen him build up an excellent reputation, making it no surprise that he was named a man of valour.
