Lifesaver goes extra mile to retrieve human remains

Police and other authorities were notified by a fisherman after it was spotted floating in the river.

Sanele Dotye (20) from Gamalakhe was the lifesaver who helped get the body part to shore that was found in the Umtentweni River, reported in last week’s Herald.

The human remains was found in the river by Port Shepstone K9 Search and Rescue Unit and Rudi Prinsloo from Medevac Ambulance Service in the late afternoon on January 4.

Police and other authorities were notified by a fisherman after it was spotted floating in the river.

Sergeant Mark Banjo and his dog, Ferie led the search along the banks of the river.

Not long into their search, Ferie found the remains near the bank of the river.

Dotye, who has worked at the Umtentweni beach since 2019, assisted in getting the remains safely to shore.

A brave Dotye said it was the first time he had seen a body part in his career as a lifesaver.

Despite Search and Rescue members going back to the river to look for the rest of the body, nothing more has been found.
