RNM still waits to elect mayor
It is now more than two months after the local government elections were held, but RNM has only been able to elect its speaker.
The date for a reconvened inaugural council meeting has not been set as yet at Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM).
Positions of the mayor, deputy mayor and chief whip are still vacant as the municipality has not elected these top three posts.
It is now more than two months after the local government elections were held, but RNM has only been able to elect its speaker.
In the first council meeting the African National Congress (ANC) requested that the process of electing for these positions be moved or postponed to another council sitting.
At a second council meeting which was scheduled to elect these posts, ANC members protested outside the municipality and blocked the councillors from going into the Port Shepstone Civic Centre where the meeting was set to take place.
At the last meeting on December 23, 2021 some 43 councillors decided not to attend the meeting and therefore council did not meet the quorum.
RNM spokesperson Simon April said no date has been set as yet for a follow-up council meeting.
