New visible police commander for Scottburgh
She has been a member of the Saps since November 1991, and last November reached her 30 years' of service milestone.
Scottburgh’s Community Policing Forum (CPF) held its first meeting for the year at Scottburgh police station last week, where members acknowledged and congratulated the newly appointed Visible Police (Vispol) commander of Scottburgh Saps, Lieutenant Colonel Vijay Moodley.
Lt Col Moodley previously served as a captain at the station and recently earned herself a promotion.
“I was overwhelmed with emotions when I found out I was promoted, and I am honoured to take up this position under our station commander, Colonel Ralph Ruiters,” she said.
She has been a member of the Saps since November 1991, and last November reached her 30 years’ of service milestone.
She was stationed in Umkomaas until August 1996, and then moved to Scottburgh where she has served faithfully ever since.
Prior to the CPF meeting, Scottburgh Saps station commander, Colonel Ruiters, congratulated Lt Col Moodley on her achievement. Although he was unable to attend the meeting, he sent a congratulatory message through another senior officer who made CPF members aware of their new Vispol commander.
In the station commander’s message, it was indicated that Lt Col Moodley’s promotion was ‘well-deserved’ and ‘long overdue.’
She was also given an opportunity to engage with CPF members and representatives from various departments.
“I am going to be making some changes slowly but surely and will provide more details and feedback at the next meeting,” said Moodley.
Crime in general was also discussed, and it was noted that during the festive period, crime in December had increased compared to the previous year.
An Amandawe ward 14 representative was also present and stated that the area has a high rate of robberies, but residents are hardly reporting any crimes.
The local resident said that on average three people are being robbed a week, but needs the Saps to educate people on reporting crimes in order to help with crime prevention.
Another representative from the KwaCele and Dududu areas mentioned that stock theft is now a major problem too.
Lt Col Moodley acknowledged these matters along with other officers and CPF members, and also asked everyone to relay messages to their respective areas to avoid mob justice, and if they apprehend perpetrators to restrain them and await police arrival.
