Domestic workers warned to be careful after a woman is attacked in Sea Park

Another unfortunate incident occurred at the back of Sea Park yesterday (Thursday) afternoon.

Domestic workers in the Sea Park area are warned to be alert and vigilant when walking to and from work.

A post on the Southport Crime Sector Group suggested that women not walk alone and to rather team up and walk in groups together,  and to refrain from using isolated footpaths.

The Whatsapp message said that an unfortunate incident occurred at the back of Sea Park yesterday afternoon, January 27:

“A woman, while walking home, was allegedly threatened by an unknown African man with a gold tooth and armed with a firearm. He robbed her of property and sexually assaulted her,” read the message.

*** SAFETY TIPS FOR WOMEN ***

Police spokesman Captain Petros Mpinge recommended the following safety tips:

  • School children and women walk in groups as there is usually safety in numbers. Change your route home every now and then if possible.
  • Avoid walking even in groups when it is dark and in unknown  areas. Avoid carrying too much cash and valuables. Walk briskly and with purpose.
  • Carry a stick to protect yourself if possible or a whistle to attract attention. Scream as loudly as possible for help.
  • At social gatherings, do not accept open drinks from strangers and do not leave your drink unattended at any time. Do not accept a ride home with anyone unfamiliar to you or that makes you feel unsafe or uncomfortable.
