PROTEST UPDATE: Ugu mayor receives memorandum from Umzinto community

Residents of Mistake Farm, Farm Isonti, Gandhinagar, Hazelwood, Roseville, Nkonkas and Sanathan planned a peaceful protest today in hopes of getting their water restored.

The Ugu mayor, Cllr Phumlile Mthiyane, visited the outraged Umzinto community to address the water woes being experienced by them, earlier today.

A memorandum was handed over to her, and she will provide a response to the community’s requests in due course.

In most parts of Umzinto, protesters have since dispersed.

Original story:

Since around 04:00 today, entrances and exits to Umzinto have been blocked due to protest action.

Residents of Mistake Farm, Farm Isonti, Gandhinagar, Hazelwood, Roseville, Nkonkas and Sanathan planned a peaceful protest today in hopes of getting their water restored.

These areas have been dealing with ongoing water shortages for weeks, and they have decided to take to the streets with their placards and posters as a cry for help, and to show other communities what they have been facing on a daily basis.

Some of the blocked roads include the main entrance to Umzinto at Sasol garage; Court Road after the Kadville Heights turn off; Umzinto main road (at ICC, old FNB); road leading to Gandhinagar at the corner of Redcliff Road and the entrances to Gandhinagar have been closed in both directions.

Some protesters have been burning tyres and debris to block sections of road.

It is believed that once the protesters’ delegation is received by Ugu and their memorandum is acknowledged, a community briefing will be done and they are expected to disperse.
