Man convicted for illegal sand mining at Umzumbe River

This sentence serves to send a warning to people who are mining sand and other resources without the necessary permits and documentation.

A 31-year-old man was recently convicted in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court for contravening the Minerals Act.

He was given a fine of R10 000 or two years’ imprisonment, half of which is suspended for five years.

A case was opened at Saps Southport for Contravening the Minerals Act, after several trucks were found loading river sand at the Umzumbe River on September 7, 2020 without permits.

Police spokesman Captain Petros Mpinge said this sentence serves to send a warning to people who are mining sand and other resources without the necessary permits and documentation.
