Habitual thief sentenced to 15 years in jail

The robber would threaten his victims with a knife and take their cash and possessions.

Mboneni Simphiwe Chiliza (36) was recently sentenced in the Port Shepstone Regional Court to 15 years’ imprisonment for robbery with aggravating circumstances.

The court heard that Chiliza would threaten his victims with a knife and take their cash and possessions.

He has also been convicted and sentenced for previous cases of housebreaking and will appear again in court on another charge of house robbery.

Police spokesman Sergeant Sibu Ncane said this pattern of criminal behaviour surely affected the length of his sentence, and habitual criminals must be removed from society.

He said Margate members painstakingly traced and checked all his residential addresses before arresting him.

The investigating officer in the matter, Detective Sergeant Siphiwosenkosi Hlongwane of Margate Detective Service strongly opposed bail, preventing Chiliza from committing further robberies.

Ugu District Detective Commander, Brigadier Bongani Sibiya thanked the members for the teamwork and was pleased with the investigation and sentence obtained by the investigating officer.

Acting Margate station commander Colonel David Nala commended the whole team and the investigating officer for ensuring the perpetrator was now behind bars.
