Cultural and heritage experience kicks off at Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre
Festivities will take place at Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre today and tomorrow, and at St Mike's beach on Sunday.
In the true spirit of South African diversity, the KZN Department of Arts and Culture has taken a step to pioneer the arts in the province with the introduction of the KZN Cultural and Heritage Experience.
This is set to take place at the Ugu Sports & Leisure Centre, starting today and finishing up on Sunday.
The first of its kind in the province, the department officially launched the weekend experience at the Margate Hotel on Wednesday (March 2) and it seeks to provide a platform for all artists from all facets of the the creative sphere.
Amongst those in attendance were Premier Sihle Zikalala, MEC for Arts and Culture, Sport and Recreation Hlengiwe Mavimbela, Ugu Exco member Dixie Nciki and RNM Deputy Mayor Sbu Shange.
“As KZN we have some of the richest cultural diversity, and it reflects through our art. We are excited about kicking off this three day experience as we are invested in the South Coast and believe that this was the right place to start,” said MEC Mavimbela.

The festivities are set to begin today with an exhibition targeted at school pupils. Entry is free but will be limited to 2000. “We all know children are our future, and it’s important to invest in their skills,” Mavimbela said.
Fine arts and craft stalls will be set up with a screening of three locally produced movies set to take place at 16:00.

Saturday will be the main event with culinary experiences on offer and live performances from local national acts the likes of Ficz, Tzozo, Holly Ray and Kelly Khumalo in an effort to bring unity in the community.
“We will provide the ultimate fusion of what true KZN culture is along with a platform of opportunity and exposure which will also grow the local economy” Nciki said.
Sunday will close off the weekend with a family day that will be held at St. Michaels beach. “We invite everyone to come with their families and enjoy the good South Coast fellowship we have to offer. We are more than ready,” said Shange.
