Court date for suspected rapist

The court heard how he did not want to apply for bail, at this stage.

The man branded the ‘Sea Park Serial Rapist‘ appeared again in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court last Friday.

The man, from Nkenhlamandla Ward in Umzumbe, is facing 15 charges.

According to the charge sheet, he is facing charges of rape, attempted rape, attempted murder, theft, robbery with aggravating circumstances, housebreaking with intent to rob, housebreaking with intent to steal and theft, unlawful possession of a semiautomatic firearm and illegal possession of ammunition.

The court heard how he did not want to apply for bail, at this stage.

Senior state prosecutor Sohana Moodley requested that the matter be postponed for eight to 10 weeks, as there were investigations outstanding which would take time, namely the gathering of DNA results from two of the victims, and an outstanding ballistics report.

Moodley said the state had already summarised the document for purposes of referring it to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) office, for possible trial in the high court.

Magistrate Bryan Munilall postponed the case to May 10 for further investigation. The suspect was arrested by members of Saps Southport Detective Service, detectives from Ugu District Operational Command Centre, as well as members from Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, Port Shepstone in Umgababa area on February 22, 2022.

For weeks, residents of Sea Park and Southport lived in fear, uncertain as to when he would strike next. His arrest was greatly welcomed by the community.
