Ugu receives another qualified audit

He said that he hopes that next time around it would be significantly better.

Ugu District Municipality has received another qualified audit, the third in the last three years.

During Ugu’s recent council meeting, the auditor general’s report was presented to councillors, amakhosi, the mayor and managers. Yet again, Ugu has been unable to get a clean or unqualified audit.

The report mentioned that some tenders were given to people who did not make submissions, some contracts were extended without being advertised, and in most cases, Ugu did not comply with the law and regulations.

DA councillor George Henderson said the outcome was understandable since the municipality has not had a chief financial officer (CFO) for a long time.

“We all know the reason we cannot get a clean audit, we haven’t had a CFO for months and we have not appointed a municipal manager (MM) as yet.”

He said that he hopes that next time around it would be significantly better.

During the meeting, speaker Sizwe Ngcobo said the municipality still had a lot of challenges, but hopes that things would be sorted out soon, with Premier Sihle Zikalala heavily involved.

“At a recent meeting the premier told us that Ugu’s challenges are being looked at and they are prioritising us.”

Another matter that was meant to be addressed was the election of the chief whip, but Ngcobo asked that this be postponed as he and the leadership had unfinished discussions.
