Umdoni places second in cleanest town competition

The purpose of this competition is to focus on the National Waste Management Strategy and the Climate Change Response Policy.

Umdoni Municipality bagged a whopping R800 000 in the Greenest Municipality Competition in the Urban Municipalities Category for the second cleanest town in KwaZulu-Natal.

In first place was KwaDukuza Municipality which received R1-m in prize money.

The Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs hosted the awards ceremony at the ICC in Durban earlier this month. It has been an annual event since 2001.

The purpose of this competition is to focus on the National Waste Management Strategy and the Climate Change Response Policy.

“It encourages municipalities, as the coalface of service delivery to adopt green practices that result in reduced environmental risks, ecological scarcities and sustainable development,” said Umdoni communications manager, Sphelele Cele.

“The criteria of the competition was tough as municipalities had to provide a good waste management plan, policies and strategies, as well as present efforts in soliciting support and partners in spheres of local government to address social upliftment and economic growth, getting municipalities to become roleplayers in the green economy.”

Umdoni mayor, Sibongile Khathi, mentioned that they were pleasantly surprised to receive second place in this competition.

“The competition acknowledges our efforts to protect the environment, however there is still a lot of work that needs to be put in to become the cleanest town which advocates for the best green economy,” said Mayor Khathi.

She added that the prize money would be put to good use in advocating for a better environmentally healthy municipality.
