Rediscover local libraries this week

Let’s reimagine, repurpose and rediscover libraries during South African National Library week which runs from March 14 to 20.

South African Library Week was initiated by Library and Information Association of South Africa in 2001. The purpose of this week is for all types of libraries to create awareness and to market their services to current and potential users.

In Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM) there are 13 libraries, five mobile libraries in the rural areas and a modular library that will be opening soon in KwaNzimakwe.

Senior librarian, Susan Roos encouraged everyone to make use of the library’s free service.

“Everyone is welcome to use the resources of the RNM libraries. It must be noted that only members may loan library material, and items on loan must be returned to the same library from which they were borrowed.”

She explained that local libraries assist learners with school projects.

All libraries have computers available for public use, while some have full cyber cafes.

They also offer basic training in Microsoft programmes such as Word and Excel.

The cafes also host workshops and school visits promoting the service of the libraries.

Some libraries have a toy section as well, and welcome the little ones to make use of the library while their parents are browsing.

Three libraries, namely Margate, Kwandwalane and Port Shepstone have a mini library for the blind services available for community members to use.

Some also have a gaming section.
