New hospital for Scottburgh

The eagerly anticipated facility will have a modern, state-of-the-art day hospital, with 20 day beds and two theatres, allowing local general practitioners to admit patients.

It’s exciting times for Hibiscus Hospital Group as it looks forward to opening a new hospital in Scottburgh, which will have numerous spin-offs for the local economy.

The hospital is expected to open in May, dependent on the approval of the relevant regulatory authority.

Richard Mills, CEO of the Hibiscus Hospital Group, said the group was looking forward to taking healthcare to the community and explained that the new facility would employ about 70 direct staff members.

The site of the new hospital located on the corner of Airth and Erskine Roads in Scottburgh.

“We will also employ about 30 indirect staff through outsourced services, for example, security and cleaning services,” he said.

The eagerly anticipated facility will have a modern, state-of-the-art day hospital, with 20 day beds and two theatres, allowing local general practitioners to admit patients.

It will provide the following services: ophthalmology (eye surgery/cataracts), orthopaedics ((Rhizotomy and other orthopaedic surgeries), general surgery (gastroscopy and colonoscopy), dermatology, and ear nose and throat (ENT), maxillo-facial, gynaecological, dentistry, urology and general practitioner procedures.

The other part of the hospital will consist of a well-designed modern sub-acute medical facility. This excludes Intensive Care Units (ICUs) and maternity. However, transport will be arranged to Hibiscus Hospital Port Shepstone, for patients who require these services, this sub-acute facility will have 18 beds and 4 paediatric beds.

Mr Mills said the group sincerely appreciates the support from the local doctors and community, especially for being so patient during this delayed project.

“I also appreciate the support from the local Umdoni Municipality, the Department of Health along with all other stakeholders,” he added.

Based on their catchy slogan “We are here for you, when you need us”, Mills says Hibiscus Hospital Port Shepstone has been around for some 30 years, and is backed by a outstanding team of professionals, and it is with this success, that has enabled two new facilities – in Scottburgh and Cato Ridge – to be opened.

Among many impressive features, Cato Ridge has 54 beds and two major operating theatres, equipped with the latest technology and a comprehensive Radiology Unit, services include CT scans.
