Couple distraught after fire destroys their home

Flames spread over a wall setting their caravan home alight.

A fire which destroyed the Banana Beach Fruit and Veg Market in Sunwich Port recently, has also cost 83 year old Betty van Rensburg and her husband André their home.

The fire started at the market situated in front of their home at Banana Cabanas Caravan Park.

Flames spread over a wall setting their caravan home alight.

Andre van Rensburg points to the remains of his caravan home in Sunwich Port.

“Besides a fridge, washing machine, bed and a few documents, we have been left with absolutely nothing. Our only home was taken away from us by someone trying to hurt a good person and now we are suffering,” Betty said.

After travelling for most of last year, the elderly couple had finally chosen to settle at the caravan park.

However after the fire, the place they had intended to make their permanent home was no more and they have been forced to move in with their daughter.

“It’s unbelievable that someone could do this. To want to destroy someone so much that they do not care who they hurt. An innocent man was making an honest living has now lost everything, and now we have too,” she said.

The couple has confirmed that they have reported the matter to Southport Saps.

According to provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Thembeka Mbele, a suspect was released by the court on bail and the case was postponed to this week.
