Opinion: Have things changed in South Africa?

Do the 'powers that be' actually care about the citizens of this country or just looking after 'me'?

It was Human Rights Day in South Africa on March 21, and as I reflect on the achievements in this regard in my country, I am sad.

Politicians are wont to drag out the events in Sharpeville so many years ago but have things really changed there?

This, as was Apartheid, was a travesty but do the citizens have a better life? This is not the only example of abuse of human rights.

Lack of water, electricity, good schools and education, eradication of pit toilets at schools, jobs and housing, etc is still very evident.

Since then citizens have experienced the Marikana massacre and Life Esidimeni scandal.

On our doorstep we have the debacle of provision of water for all the communities on the South Coast. Water is a basic human right.

Do the ‘powers that be’ actually care about the citizens of this country or just looking after ‘me’?
