Sheppie detective secures two convictions
In the first case involving extortion, two men were sentenced to to a fine of R10 000 or 10 months imprisonment of which half is suspended for five years.
Detective Warrant Officer Ntsikelelo Nqubula of Port Shepstone Detective Service obtained two successful convictions in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court recently.
The first conviction related to an incident which took place on December 4, 2020.
Police spokesperson Captain Petros Mpinge said a woman received an anonymous call informing her that he was tasked to kill her for a large amount of cash.
The caller then requested an amount of R30 000 be paid and the balance was to be paid later.
If she contacted the police thereafter she will still be killed.
The woman, fearing for her life paid the amount and reported the matter to the police.
A case of extortion was opened and not long after two people were arrested.
The money was repaid to the complainant and the two accused, Lucky Mthandeni Khoza (38) and Lwazi Molefe (37) were sentenced last week, to a fine of R10 000 or 10 months imprisonment of which half is suspended for five years.
In another matter, Cpt Mpinge said a woman was walking in Reynolds Street, Port Shepstone when she was robbed of her cellphone at knifepoint.
She screamed out for help and police members who were nearby chased and apprehended the 21-year-old man.
The accused, Zola Mkhanyawo appeared in court several times and was convicted of theft.
He was sentenced to 18 months direct imprisonment.
