WET WEATHER UPDATE: Heavy rainfall closes roads and causes damage to KZN South Coast
The latest level 5 weather warning from the South African Weather Service urges residents to delay travelling during these wet weather conditions. Here is a list of roads currently closed in and around the KZN South Coast.
The latest level 5 weather warning from the South African Weather Service indicates that significant heavy rains will continue into the evening (today, April 11) in major parts of the province, especially the eastern parts.
MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Sipho Hlomuka urged residents to exercise utmost caution and where possible, delay and suspend any activities.
Residents residing in low lying areas are urged to seek shelter on higher ground as the severe heavy rains is expected to cause localised flooding.
The ongoing heavy rains, which come at a time when the ground is already saturated from the weekend’s rains increase the risk of flooding in informal settlements, low-lying areas and bridges.
Local disaster management teams continue to monitor high-risk areas across the province.
*** So far, the following roads along the KZN South Coast have been affected:
* Road closed on Marine Drive in Margate, north of the Margate Saps, leading down to the garage in Bank Street.
* P200 between Izotsha and Gamalakhe closed. Authorities are on the scene. Please use alternative route.
* Be careful of the Hibberdene area which is believed to be flooded. Water flowing over the R102.
* Tree fallen across Mitchell Dive in Port Shepstone.
* Please be careful the main road is under water in Port Shepstone.
