WEATHER UPDATE: Schools and roads closed as rain continues to bucket down – KZN South Coast

More than 300mm of rain has fallen since Friday. Here is the latest update on road closures and no-go areas in and around the coast.

Motorists are urged to drive carefully and be extra vigilant with the extreme rainfall currently being experienced. 

 
Mudslides, fallen trees and flooding are taking place in and around the South Coast.
 
Robert Mckenzie of KwaZulu-Natal Emergency Services asked motorists to please let emergency services pass them.  “It’s very frustrating for emergency vehicles to respond and they can’t pass.” 
 
Margate CBD under flood.
 
Due to the severity of the weather, schools and businesses around the province have closed for the day.
 
As from last night (Monday) Bank Street in Margate and the CBD is a no-go zone.
 
Please avoid using this road today (April 12) until further notice, and use alternative routes if you stay in that area.
 
Landslide on the R102 near Tweni.
 
Take note of the landslide between Port Shepstone and Shelly Beach. Road users will not be able to use the toll road to get to Margate from Port Shepstone.
 
A motorist got into a difficult situation in Ramsgate.
 
If you can avoid travelling on the road please do so, but if you need to travel today please be cautious. 

 
The following roads have been reported for various reasons over the last 12 – 24 hours:

❗National road between Margate Saps and back street
❗P200 Gamalake to Port Shepstone
❗Margate Road main town
❗Port Shepstone Marine Drive and R620
❗N2 Shelly Beach to Port Shepstone
❗N2 to Scottsburgh and Durban
❗Oshabeni area
❗Batsone low level bridge
❗Old Pont road Port Edward
❗Umbango area
❗Knoxsgore Road
❗R102 Umtentweni near Caltex garage 
❗R620 Oslo beach
 
Please note that some of these roads may have been cleared.
 
The bad weather has felled trees and caused mud slides. This is near Tweni.
 
 
Please use alternative routes and avoid areas with low level bridges.
