Batten down the hatches, strong winds are predicted to hit the coast.

Heavy wind gusts are expected today, reaching speeds of 75 km per hour to 110 km per hour, in Port Shepstone by 14:00. This is the opinion of The Weather Hooligan.

In Port Shepstone, strong winds have already hit. According to news sources, this storm system which is currently classified as a subtropical storm named Issa, by some authorities, is heading back up the coastline of KZN in a northern direction. This system basically made a U-Turn now from its original southern direction course.

According to Severe Weather Facts South Africa;

It reports that Port Edward to Durban should remain on high alert, especially during the night right through today (Wednesday).
🌀 Winds of up to 120kmph will cause destructive damage and dangerous debris on roads and areas traveled therefore remain indoors to assure your safety.
💦 Rainfall between 300mm to 500mm in already devastated areas.
The South African Weather Service.

In a statement released yesterday (Tuesday) by the South African Weather Service, it said:

Could this rain system be attributed to global warming and climate change? No, as weather scientists we cannot attribute individual weather events occurring on short timescales to longer-term events, occurring over years or decades.

However, notwithstanding the above, we can state with confidence that globally (as a direct result of global warming and associated climate change) all forms of severe and extreme weather (such as heatwaves, heavy rain, and coastal storm surge events) are becoming more frequent and more extreme that in the recent past.

In other words, heavy rain events such as the current incident can rightfully be expected to recur in the future and with increasing frequency.

The good news is that, by tomorrow the current rainfall system will have weakened considerably, heralding a spell of a few days of settled dry weather. However, the public should take note that rain is expected to return to many of our provinces, ahead of and during the coming Easter weekend, when many people will be traveling to other parts of the country.
