Taps ran dry for many in the Ugu District over the Easter weekend, caused in part by the recent flood damage.

Ugu has been busy today repairing a broken pipe along the Mzimkhulu river in a difficult-to-access area.

“The amount of work is extensive as the excavator had to open about 2,5km access to get to where the pipe broke. This has delayed the initially estimated repair time. The break is at a gorge where it’s extremely dangerous to work in. Our internal teams and a service provider are on site to do repairs; however the repair is going to take some time to complete as a longer length of pipeline will be replaced, and the working area is in the gorge. This work may take more than 48 hours from now (Monday),” said spokesman France Zama.

He added that Ugu would try to connect systems in order to get water to affected areas in Port Shepstone.

“However, the northern system has no possibilities of any interconnections.” At this point, an extensive water relief programme is the only option, which will be planned, as Ugu has also received a number of water tankers from Cogta.

Further information on which areas have water and which don’t could not be obtained from Ugu on the Easter weekend public holiday.
