Anti-snare group comes to the rescue of Great Dane pup, Harris

Great community effort resulted in the missing dog being found.

When the alarm was raised to find two missing dogs, Harris and Lily – the South Coast Anti-snaring Group – jumped into action.

An urgent request for help was sent out via WhatsApp groups on Monday after 18:30.

The dogs had gone missing in the leafy suburb of Umtentweni.

Plenty of snares found in the bush in and around Umtentweni.

The sausage dog, Lily returned to the house but the black Great Dane pup of eight months remained missing.

Headed by power couple, Craig Saunders and his girlfriend Roxanne Smith, together with a large group of volunteers, a ‘Find Harris’ operation was launched.

The team, equipped with torches and headlamps, searched the dense forest but not hearing any further howls from Harris called off the operation a few hours later, with no luck.

Some of the many snares removed.

But Craig’s brother Ryan returned at about 03:00 to continue hunting for Harris. But, still, no luck

The search for Harris continued on Tuesday with volunteers finding and pulling out many snares from the bush.

Two days later (yesterday) a dehydrated and stressed-out Harris was discovered stuck in a snare.

More snares removed from the forest.
Craig said Harris was stuck in two snares, and is slowly recovering.
“I would like to thank all that took the time to assist us with this awesome work that we are trying to do for the community,” said Craig.

Harris’s owner said she is eternally grateful for the community spirit and mutual love for animals shown.
