Recent floods suspend Umdoni’s budget roadshows

The roadshows were to run from April 11- 29 and the Umdoni leadership was to undertake a task engaging all wards on the proposed budget for the 2022/23 fiscal year.

Umdoni Municipality’s IDP and draft budget roadshows have been suspended after a national state of disaster was implemented due to the recent flooding, which led to a loss of lives, damage to infrastructure and homes and interruption of municipal service delivery programmes.

The roadshows were to run from April 11- 29 and the Umdoni leadership was to undertake a task engaging all wards on the proposed budget for the 2022/23 fiscal year.

“The days of the IDP and budget roadshows were inundated with back to back visits to various affected communities where mayor Sibongile Khathi with the leadership from provincial government and the district have visited numerous areas that have been obliterated by the floods,” said Sphelele Cele, Umdoni Municipality’s communications manager.

Mayor Khathi added that what she and her colleagues witnessed in the areas visited was “utterly tear-jerking”.

“We sympathise with the affected communities, and as Umdoni we commit to working together with the communities to rebuild Umdoni,” said the mayor.

A new schedule will be created, but in the interim the community can examine the draft budget on the municipal website: www.umdoni.gov.za and at Scottburgh Library and formally record their inputs.

The Umdoni community is further reminded that its opinion is enormously valued, and inputs can be made on the estimated budget of R475 199 379 which translates to R51 115 726 allocated for the capital budget and R424 083 653 for the operational budget.
