Earth Day: Youth help clean up Aliwal Shoal after floods
Pupils managed to collect numerous bags of litter and debris from the beach during the course of the morning.
In celebration of this year’s Earth Day, the South Durban Community Environmental Alliance (SDCEA) recently organised an event for the youth to play their part in saving the planet.
This year’s Earth Day theme was “Invest in our planet” which encouraged people to take accountability and help fight one of Earth’s greatest threats – climate change.

The SDCEA was able to bring together pupils from Wentworth High, Umbilo Secondary and Fairdale Secondary Schools to participate in an event on the Aliwal Shoal, Umkomaas and were hosted by Blue Ocean Dive Resort.
A great morning of creativity and fun regarding investing in the future was planned, however due to the aftermath of the extreme wet weather and flooding, the SDCEA felt that the best possible way to properly invest in the future is to be adaptive and address current needs which involved a beach cleanup at Aliwal Shoal.

Pupils managed to collect numerous bags of litter and debris from the beach during the course of the morning.
Afterwards, each school was given an opportunity to present a poem in honour of Earth Day.

Pupils Layth Scholtz, Renice Kroutz, Susanna Cele, Nosiphiwe Mkhize Jane Yolen and Kieren Kleinand were thanked for contributing to the day by writing and performing poems, as well as all other beach cleanup participants.
