WARNING: Be on guard against fraud, especially online
Under no circumstances must you provide callers with any personal details.
Police warn the public to be wary of fraudsters and scam artists. Port Shepstone police spokesperson, Captain Petros Mpinge said it is common for persons to pretend to call from your bank informing you that someone is trying to access your bank account, and they request your PIN or some verification from you.
“Do not respond to these calls, instead call your bank or visit your bank personally to be informed and updated on their procedures. Under no circumstances must you provide callers with any personal details, even if they sound convincing,” he said.
He added that people have fallen prey to “Bitcoin” or online trading scams where someone known to them has made a fortune on trades. It is recommended that such trading be well researched and investigated by reputable agencies and banks
“In some cases Instagram accounts have been hacked and the fraudster is communicating with you and not the person known to you,” explained Capt Mpinge.
