The silver darlings streamed into coastal waters yesterday, Friday with thousands flocking to Margate Beach from about midday.
About four successful nettings saw over 500 crates packed with sardines which hit the streets and shops of KwaZulu-Natal fast, and into the frying pans.
This morning Saturday the silver fish were seen on sale at B. Nagiah’s in Midrand, Randburg and Bayview for approximately R60 per dozen.
Here on the South Coast fisheries were selling sardines for R50 a dozen yesterday.
Literally every household loves these seasonal fish that migrate almost every winter on the coastline in large schools. Fried inside or outside but preferably outside and served with fresh bread, or the Indian way with dhall and rice and a good cuppa tea or coffee. It’s got to be the most satisfying on a cold day.
News today
The news today is that about six crates were netted at St Mike’s Beach this morning. According to South Coast’s fishing guru, Steven Moodley who is at St Mike’s Beach, said netters are still in the water.
“There’s lots of activities in the shoals but nothing for the fishermen to have a good fight with the likes of hooking a garrick or shark to add to the fun. Some shad was caught at Margate pier this morning.”
There’s also been reports of activities from Pennington to Hibberdene.
