Road repairs under way in Scottburgh
The collapsed section of the R102, Scottburgh and numerous other local roads are in the process of being repaired.
Umdoni residents have noticed numerous roads being repaired in the Scottburgh area.
Workers have been seen in action for the past few days and this sight has excited many motorists who have had to put up with pothole riddled roads for months.
“The repairs are being done to fulfil Umdoni Municipality’s urban-road redemption mission with the aim of ensuring that the road network is on par with the standards of the urban areas,” explained Umdoni communications manager, Sphelele Cele.
“Over the previous months, the municipality together with a service provider conducted and completed an in-depth assessment of all urban roads to ascertain the level of dilapidation per road and further outline the required resources of rehabilitation.”
There is currently a total of 2100 square metres of road, which was further exacerbated by the April flooding, undergoing rehabilitation.
These include Margaret Avenue, David Road, Galway Street, Williamson Street and Taylor Street all under Scottburgh.
The municipality has assessed in excess of 50 urban roads and a portion of them including roads in rural areas will undergo rehabilitation aided by a R48-m funds allocation from the council approved budget of R479 846 651 for the 2022/23 fiscal year.
At the presentation of the 2022/23 budget speech, mayor Sibongile Khathi emphasised the prioritisation of glaring problems surrounding the municipality’s road network both in urban and rural domains of Umdoni.
“As this council, we made a commitment to ensure services are robustly improved and this multi-million rand rehabilitation programme is our immediate response to addressing the long-standing problems surrounding our road network,” she said.
The community is urged to be patient while roads are being rehabilitated.
“The road network rehabilitation will be a multi-year programme implemented with an end goal of a 100% rehabilitation of roads throughout the Umdoni precinct.”
Locals are also notified of the Department of Transport’s update on the collapsed R102, Scottburgh road near GJ Crookes Hospital.
The road collapsed due to flooding and has been inaccessible since April.
The department confirmed that work is being done and its internal team is working to construct a temporary structure on the damaged portion of the road that will allow it to reopen.
The team is on site and the road is expected to open around mid-July.
