The man remained in police custody throughout the trial.

Mthokozisi Mthoko Gumbi (34) from Port Edward was recently sentenced to life imprisonment for the rape of a 13-year-old girl.

The Port Shepstone Regional Court also found Gumbi unfit to possess a firearm.

He was further not permitted to work with children, in addition to his name being recorded in the National Register for Sex Offenders.

Police spokesman, Captain Petros Mpinge said Gumbi lured the child to his room on September 14, 2019.

“After the incident the brave young girl reported the rape to a family member, who then contacted the police,” he said.

He remained in police custody throughout the trial.

The investigating officer who worked on the case was Detective Sergeant Nkosentsha Ntini of Margate Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS).
