Lions leadership retreat for Grade 11s
The entire project was funded by the club's charity account together with generous sponsorships and support.
Port Shepstone Lions’ 34th Annual Leadership Retreat was held at Camp Anerley last weekend.
Some 46 Grade 11 learners, recently selected for the Port Shepstone High School 2023 Executive Council of Leaders, attended the camp.
The full weekend programme commenced shortly after they arrived with a welcome address by retreat convener, Lion Wilko Kunz, a course briefing by Lion Jeff Smith, an address by principal Kathy Nel and the official opening address by club president Mervin Curnow.
This was followed by a talk on Lions Clubs International by Lion Denis Meyer.
The group was thereafter divided into five colour-coded teams which took part in various team-building exercises.
After supper the ECLs enjoyed an ice-breaker exercise before heading off to bed.
They had an early rise on the Saturday morning and were served breakfast prepared by the Lion Ladies.
Then it was down to business, with lectures on choices, conflict management, CW type activities and an innovative engineering exercise.
After lunch they embarked on an ‘Amazing Race’, with Lions who acted as marshals and transported the teams around the course.

Sunrise Farms allowed the club to utilise its farmlands for this course, which was organised and run by Lion Kevin Ross.
The formal dinner was held at Port Shepstone Country Club on the Saturday night, an elegant affair indeed.
Emcee Lion Denis Meyer did a superb job in explaining the various formalities and protocols associated with a typical formal Lions gathering.
Highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Lions Floating trophy to the Pink team which won the Amazing Race challenge.
On Sunday, the group, once again had an early start for breakfast.
Then it was on to morning focus with Lion Wilko Kunz, a recap of the previous day’s lectures, lectures on self-care, balance and stress, code of conduct and running detentions and campaigning for heads and voting.
At the end of the retreat, learners were given an opportunity to give feedback and evaluate their experiences whereafter they were each presented with a certificate of participation by Lion Jeff Smith.
Thanks to all involved, including 1st Vice District Governor Lindie Van Wyk from Pretoria Jacaranda Lions Club, who attended and participated in the Friday session.
