Sporting equipment handed to disabled
Chess games and relay sticks were some of the items handed over.
The Department of Sports and Recreation and Ugu District Municipality handed over sporting equipment to people with disabilities last week Tuesday.
The equipment was received by the chairpersons of organisations for the disabled of each local municipality.
Ugu councillors, Cllr Nompilo Mweshe and Busisiwe Machi did the hand over through the municipality’s Special Programmes Unit and Department of Sports and Recreation.
They gave basketball wheelchairs, netballs, soccer balls as well as kits for different sporting codes to local municipalities who are champions for the disabled.
Chess games and relay sticks were also some of the items handed over.
Cllr Mweshe said they are grateful to the department for giving these kits.
“Our wish is to see you one day flying somewhere for the Paralympic Games.”
She encouraged chairpersons of the relevant organisations to also visit schools and introduce themselves to children with disabilities.
“Introduce yourselves and do something for these children because sometimes they have nothing to do because of their limitations.”
She said she will ensure that the equipment is used for sporting purposes.
