South Coast rallies to assist Masinenge fire victims
The Masinenge fire victims are still in need of mattresses, blankets and baby items.
The South Coast Community has joined forces in providing much-needed relief for the Masinenge fire victims.
Ugu District Municipality leadership, together with Ray Nkonyeni Municipality, the MEC of the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs and officials from the department of Home Affairs and the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) went to assess the damage caused by the fire and assisted the victims in applying for their identity documents and Sassa cards.
Ignite Revolution’s Jessica Naicker said members of the community responded to their call for donations and on Sunday a bakkie load of blankets, clothing, groceries and a tent (collected by the Umtwentweni community) was taken to the victims.

“Ignite responded with an additional bakkie load of mattresses and according to those on site there was still a huge shortfall of mattresses, blankets and groceries. Baby related items; nappies, clothing, milk, purity are needed urgently, “said Naicker.

Democratic Alliance Women’s Network (DAWN) has also arrange various drop off points for donations.
“Anyone who is willing to donate items can drop them off at the Southport nursery on 7 Bendigo Road, my home in Umtentweni on 30 Bend Road , Tyson Properties in Shelly Beach, Southcoast Mall and in Southbroom,” said Lesley Williams.
Drop off point in Southbroom is with Bex and Jonny Gilling at 12 Imbezane Drive, Southbroom. Their number is 060 3318319.

Ray Nkonyeni spokesperson Simon April said the municipality has also organised a drop off point at their fire and rescue offices in in Oslo beach.
“Anyone who wishes to donate items to assist the victims of KwaMasinenge fire can do so at our fire, rescue and disaster station located at 23 Allesund Road, Oslo Beach or they can contact fire chief, Selwyn Naidoo on 082 418 2830,” said April.
He said the MEC for Human Settlement and Public Works, Sipho Nkosi will be visiting the area, together with local leadership, today.
