PROTEST: Pensioners forced to walk 20km for taxi [WATCH]

The community is unhappy with the state of the road.

The community of eHlanzeni Village at KwaQwabe near Port Shepstone blocked eHlanzeni Road in the early hours of Thursday, February 22.

The community is unhappy with the state of the road.

“Since we were born, nobody has taken care of this village and that’s why we have to show our anger,” said protest leader Sfiso Mpisana.
The group then went to Ward 5 councillor Sthembiso Ngcobo’s house to deliver their memorandum, but he was nowhere to be found.
The community says they will camp outside his house until he attends to their grievances.

The condition of the road has always been poor, but has worsened.

The primary concern is the access to taxis, which the village relies on for transport.

“The road is not good, so taxis are not using the route. To collect their pensions, the elderly have to walk about 20km to find a taxi. This is worrying for members of the community and that’s why we are protesting,” added Mpisana.

Protest leader Sfiso Mpisana ensured no violence or vandalism occurred.

Mpisana claims they are not resorting to violence or vandalism, but they will continue protesting until the service is delivered by the municipality.
