Sudden hijacking spree hits Park Rynie area – shots fired

One of the suspects was shot in the ensuing exchange of gunfire.

THE past week has seen two hijacking incidents at the Park Rynie main beach area, as well as the arrest of a group of hijackers who had stolen another vehicle in a separate incident.

Scottburgh SAPS detectives are appealing to anyone who may have information with regard to the hijackings at the Park Rynie beach to come forward.

The first incident occurred on Tuesday evening, March 14.

It is claimed that a 22-year-old Umzinto woman and her friend were in her car at the beachfront in Park Rynie around 8.50pm when three men approached the vehicle and hijacked them. At gunpoint, the woman and her friend were forced into the back of the vehicle.

In this latest incident, on March 20 around 10.30pm, a man was hijacked and shot in the leg at the Park Rynie beach.

The suspects fled in his white Isuzu bakkie.

It has not yet been established whether the hijackers arrested in Ilfracombe on  March 19 are those involved in the earlier hijacking.

It is claimed that a shootout with various security companies and the SAPS followed when the hijackers, in a stolen Audi, were tracked down in the Scottburgh area.

Various policing units intercepted the vehicle and the suspects then attempted to flee.

One of the suspects was shot in the ensuing exchange of gunfire.

He was taken to hospital while the other suspects were detained. Police seized two firearms and the vehicle was  recovered.
