Body found floating in surf

An inquest case has been opened for investigation.

A beachgoer made a grim discovery while walking on Ramsgate Beach on Monday this week, at about midday.

Police spokesperson Captain Petros Mpinge said a woman, aged about 70, was found floating in the water near Braem Crescent at Ramsgate Beach, and may have drowned.

Shawn Herbst of Netcare 911 said reports indicate that members of the public were walking on the beach when they spotted what looked like the figure of a human floating in the surf.

“Bystanders jumped into the water and retrieved the body of an elderly woman. Medics assessed the woman, however she showed no signs of life and was declared dead on the scene,” said Herbst.

Mpinge said the woman was taken to Port Shepstone Mortuary for a post-mortem examination, to determine her cause of death.

Members of Port Shepstone Saps Search and Rescue Unit retrieved the body from the shoreline.

An inquest case has been opened for investigation.
