Police ministry to visit slain cop’s family in KwaNzimakwe, Port Edward
The warrant officer, his partner and two children, were shot dead in the driveway of their home.
Police ministry and Saps management is expected to travel to the KZN South Coast today to visit the bereaved family of murdered Warrant Officer Roger Mavundla (49), who was stationed at Port Edward police station.
Mavundla, his partner (39) and two children, aged 17 and 10, were executed in their driveway at their home in KwaNzimakwe, near Port Edward on Saturday, January 21. His third child (6) remains critical in hospital.
Hawks spokesman, Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo said that they can confirm that Hawks members from Port Shepstone Serious Organised Crime Investigation are investigating a case of murder.
“It is alleged that an off duty police member and his three family members were fatally shot by unknown suspects whilst they were entering their residence,” he said.
Mhlongo said the motive of killing is unknown and no arrests have been made at this stage.
The police ministry calls for the harshest sentences for murderers of the country’s police officers.
Police Minister, General Bheki Cele, and Saps management led by General Fannie Masemola are expected to be in Port Edward at about 10:00 this morning.
A total of 22 Saps members have been killed since July to September 2022.
