Scottburgh policemen, Sergeant Patrick Mzobe and Constable Navrone Reddy were dispatched to a complaint of housebreaking in the KwaCele area on the evening of May 4.
Although the complainant did not want to continue with the case, both members set about to do observation and continued to interview people in the vicinity.
“The members found spent cartridges and managed to locate the gunman who on seeing them tried to conceal a firearm,” said Captain Adam Francis,
Scottburgh Saps communications officer.
“The alert cops found it and arrested him for being in possession of a firearm without a licence.”
The suspect, a 31 year old man, was also charged under the Firearms Control Act for erasing the serial number of the pistol and for pointing of a firearm.
He remains in police custody and will appear in court this Thursday (18th).
Station commander, Colonel Ralph Ruiters commended the members who made the arrest and removed an unlicensed firearm from circulation. Forensic investigations will be conducted with the firearm, to determine if it was used in any other crime.
Detective Constable Werner Botha of Scottburgh Detective Service is assigned to continue the investigation.
