Court metes out harsh sentences for fatal stabbings

Detective Sergeant Senzo Chiliza is commended for a thorough investigation.

Nhlakanipho Mngoma (26) was recently convicted of culpable homicide and received a sentence of 10-years’ imprisonment at the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court.

He was found guilty of fatally stabbing a 29-year old man at Nkomba in Malengeni on December 5, 2021 at 03:00. The victim was then pronounced dead at the Umzinto Clinic.

Mngoma was never granted bail and after many court appearances, he was convicted this month. He is expected to serve his sentence at Westville Prison. He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm in terms of the Firearm Control Act.

In another unrelated case, Skhosiphe Gumede (28) was convicted of murder and sentenced to 15-years’ imprisonment. He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm in terms of the Firearm Control Act, after stabbing a 27-year old man to death in Riverside Park, Umzinto.

The incident occurred on July 28 last year at about 17:00. A few days later, Gumede was arrested, and Detective Sergeant Senzo Chiliza successfully opposed his bail.
He was convicted this month as well.

Lieutenant Colonel Mlungisi Ndwalane, Umzinto Saps station commander, commended Detective Sergeant Chiliza for the thorough investigation and also for ensuring the accused remain behind bars for a very long time.
