TAKEN TOO SOON: Brutal murder of youngster shocks community

One slain, three injured in stabbing spree

Family and friends are shattered by the brutal murder of Byron Boucher (20), which occurred in a parking lot area in Valley Road in Margate recently.

Byron and a group of his friends were waiting for a lift home when the tragic incident unfolded.

Chantelle Botha of KwaZulu Private Ambulance Service said paramedics found a young man who had sustained critical stab wounds, another person who sustained serious stab wounds and a further two who had minor stab wounds.

“Sadly, the person who sustained the critical wounds, had died before emergency services arrived,” she confirmed.

Shortly after the stabbing spree, a man (25) was arrested by Maser Security, who had quickly responded to a complaint of a fight in the parking lot.

Ant Apostolides of Maser Security said officers gathered information and started searching.

“A few minutes later, at a nearby beach, the man was spotted and arrested. The murder weapon was also recovered, Margate detectives were contacted and attended to the scene,” he said.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Sbu Ncane said three people were taken in for questioning, but only one person was linked to the crime.

He has been charged with murder, attempted murder and two counts of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He appeared in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court last Friday and then again on Monday this week. The case was postponed to Tuesday, June 13.

Byron’s mother, Leonie is devastated, and battling to come to terms with her son’s murder.

She lost her husband, Gavin in 2015, and her other son, Nathan the following year.

Byron was focused and driven on becoming qualified in security and reaction, first aid and close protection. He was planning to write his grade test this week.

Leonie said that all Byron wanted to do was to protect people.

Byron attended Suid-Natal High and was a very social person who had many friends all over the country, even abroad; he loved everyone and everyone loved him.

“He was a gentle and wonderful soul, who was humble, thoughtful and loving with an infectious laugh. He wanted to love everyone and everyone loved him, regardless of age or race,” she said.

The investigating officer is Sergeant Michelle van Niekerk. Any witnesses with information about this case can contact her on 082 3341046.
