Municipal workers shot dead in Gamalakhe
The motive for the shooting is unknown and no arrest has been made.
Two men, Sbusiso Mthembu (43) and Sboniso Mthwane (46), who were employed at Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM) were shot dead in Gamalakhe last Sunday afternoon.
It is believed they were shot by an unknown man.
Mthwane’s nephew Xolani Mtshali said his uncle was a very humble man.
“We believe he was in the wrong place at the wrong time because he has never had any issues with anyone.”
Mtshali said during the incident his uncle and Mthembu were parked at Machi Square in Gamalakhe and a man jumped out of a parked car and shot them.
Mthwane is survived by a son (16) and a daughter (2).
The Herald was unable to get hold of Mthembu’s family.
Spokesperson for RNM Simon April confirmed the deaths of Mthembu who worked as a supervisor for street cleaning and Mthwane, a machine operator at Solid Waste.
“Our deepest condolences to their families, close colleagues, and friends.”
Police spokesperson Captain Petros Mpinge said Mthwane and Mthembu succumbed to their head and neck gunshot wounds.
“It is alleged that they were driving at their place of residence when an unknown gunman attacked them. The motive for the killing is yet to be established.”
Mpinge said Gamalakhe Saps detectives are investigating a case of murder. No arrest has been made.
