Police and their canine companions are ready to assist the mid-South Coast area catch criminals and help curb crime.
This comes after a Park Rynie scrapyard was robbed last month, and information received led members of Umzinto K9 unit, Scottburgh Sub-Cluster Team and Scottburgh Detective Service to an informal settlement where a man (23) was arrested.
“He was searched by members and a gas gun and clothing fitting the description during the commission of the crime was recovered,” said Scottburgh Saps communications officer, Captain Adam Francis.
Further information led the members to a nearby residence where a second man, also aged 23 was arrested.
“Both men were charged for possession of unlicenced firearm and ammunition.”
They have since appeared in the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court and remain in police custody until their next court appearance on January 8 next year.
In the meantime, more information was received and led the team to Q Section in Umlazi where a third man (39) was arrested and found to be in possession of a fully loaded Glock firearm, a homemade firearm and shotgun rounds.
Local police thank Umlazi Detective Service, Metro Trio Crimes, ET Security and Rapid Response for their assistance with the recovery and subsequent arrest.
All three were charged for possession of unlicenced firearms and ammunition respectively, and preliminary investigations have revealed that the trio are also sought in a number of other cases.
“Umzinto K9 under the command of Captain Devandree Ellis are determined to eradicate criminal elements in the Umzinto policing area and beyond,” added Captain Francis.
“The members rely heavily on their canine companions as they persistently close the net on lawbreakers and are ready to assist other units throughout the district.”
The Ugu District VISPOL Commander, Brigadier Anton Kapp applauds the combined efforts of the team in following up information and making the arrests.
He further added that the Saps K9 units in the district are crucial to the optimal functioning of the district and ensuring public safety.
