The Saps has issued a handful of safety tips for parents and guardians to take into consideration to potentially keep their children safe.
Firstly, children should not be left alone at home or elsewhere where they can be susceptible to abuse, alcohol or drugs. They must also be taught to keep windows and doors locked and to know their parent/guardians’ contact numbers.
It is important to know the police contact numbers as well.
Children should not accept sweets, gifts or cash from strangers. Police have stated that children are easy prey for criminals and must be taught not to get into a car with someone they do not know without asking a parent’s permission first.
As a parent or guardian, police ask that you be responsible for your children and ensure their safety at all times; know where they are going and when they will return.
Keep an open line of communication and trust between them and the school, and know who their friends are.
Keep a close watch on children at swimming pools, beaches and shopping centres. Do not leave children unattended while playing outdoors, and do not allow them to run errands alone.
The public is also reminded that there is no waiting period to report a person missing.
