Hawks bust drug lab in Morningside

It's part of ongoing work to dismantle drug operations and remove illegal substances from communities.

A 43-year-old man appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court last Friday, after Hawks members uncovered an illegal drug lab in Morningside, Durban.

Hawks spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Simphiwe Mhlongo said the Port Shepstone Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit, together with the Durban Metro Police Drug Team, K9 Unit, Durban Flying Squad and eThekwini Infrastructure Task Team, acted on information about cannabis plants being cultivated in a building near Morningside.

Evidence collected during the raid on the suspected drug lab.

“An operation was conducted, and during the search officers found indoor cannabis plants, ecstasy tablets, crack cocaine, chemicals and equipment, all worth about R350 000,” said Mhlongo.

The drug peddler was arrested on the scene and charged with dealing in drugs and cultivating cannabis.

KwaZulu-Natal Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation Provincial Head, Major General (Dr) Lesetja Senona, welcomed the arrest and praised the team’s swift action.
