Ezinqoleni Regional Court jails two for hijacking
A vehicle was hijacked in June 2021, from an employee of the Department of Social Development in Pietermaritzburg.
The Ezinqoleni Regional Court recently sentenced Sizwe Mjoli (42) and Bongumusa Mjoli (43) to five years imprisonment each, wholly suspended for five years, for possession of unlicensed firearms and a stolen vehicle.
The sentencing is the culmination of an incident that occurred in June 2021, after the vehicle was hijacked from an employee of the Department of Social Development in Pietermaritzburg.
The matter was promptly reported to the Hawks members from Pietermaritzburg Serious Organised Crime Investigation, which swung into action.
Hawks spokesperson Warrant Officer Sibu Ncane said their quick response led to the arrest of Sizwe Mjoli, Bongumusa Mjoli and Thembelihle Mjoli, and they were charged with possession of unlicenced firearms and possession of a stolen vehicle in Harding on June 18, 2021.
The three appeared in the Harding Magistrate’s Court before being granted bail by the Pietermaritzburg High Court. Despite their release on bail, they failed to appear in court on subsequent occasions leading to the issuance of warrant of their arrests. The two were eventually re-arrested, with Thembelihle Mjoli still at large.
Following their re-arrest, Sizwe Mjoli and Bongumusa Mjoli continued to make court appearances before being sentenced on November 17.
The KwaZulu-Natal Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation Provincial Head, Major General (Dr) Lesetja Senona welcomed the sentence and thanked the members for the good work.
