Mozambican imprisoned for gender-based violence case in Ilfracombe, near Umkomaas
After serving his sentence, he will be deported.
Umkomaas Saps has vowed to continue with high density operations, stabilise hotspots during the festive season and stand up against gender-based violence.
On the evening of September 28, police opened a case of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm after a woman was struck on the head with a plate by her partner .
The incident occurred in Ilfracombe, near Umkomaas.
Police discovered that the suspect, Calton Manuel Sigangawe (37), was a foreign national, and he was arrested by the investigating officer Detective Sergeant Yudesh Sukunandan.
Sigangawe then appeared in the Umbumbulu Magistrate’s Court, where bail was denied.
Umkomaas Saps spokesperson Captain Ranjith Rampersad stated that Sigangawe was found guilty of assault last week, and sentenced to three months’ imprisonment. Thereafter, he will be deported to Mozambique.
