Illegal firearms and ammunition seized on South Coast
Police commend the public for reporting firearm-related incidents.
During the month of December, Umzinto Saps Task Team and Crime Prevention members acted on information regarding illegal firearms on the KZN South Coast.
• On December 15, members conducted a legal search at a residence at Alexander Informal Settlement which yielded positive results.
A 9mm Star pistol and 24 rounds of ammunition as well as a .38 special revolver and 17 rounds of ammunition were recovered.
Police confirmed that an 83-year-old man and 47-year-old woman were arrested and appeared in the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court on a charge of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
• Residents at Umkhunya location in Dududu reported to police on December 20 of a resident who was randomly firing a gun. Police tactically penetrated the house and found a 42-year-old man in possession of a Taurus-Brazil 356 magnum revolver and three live rounds of ammunition.
He was arrested and will appear in court on a charge of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. Preliminary police investigations appear to indicate that the firearm was stolen in a house robbery in the area recently.
Police commend the public for reporting illegal firearms, and stated that the ongoing fight to remove such weapons from the hands of criminals can only be successfully fought with ongoing community involvement.
