Mtwalume man assaulted for practising ‘witchcraft’

Sphiwe Magubane was injured on his hands and head.

After being suspected of practising ‘witchcraft’, Sphiwe Magubane from Mtwalume, said he was brutally assaulted by people in his neighbourhood on Christmas Day last year.

He added that six people confronted him and his brother while they were celebrating, and implied that they were ‘using muthi’.

“They had been talking about me and throwing insults, but I ignored them. However, on Christmas day, they saw me on the road and attacked me.”

He was stoned and lost consciousness. On waking, he was taken to a local hospital, where he was treated for injuries to both his hands and head.

Magubane added that he has opened a case with the police, but only two arrests were made.

“I am afraid, whenever the other four see me, they continue to insult me. I don’t know what they will do. I want the law to take its course, so that they are arrested, so I can move on with my life.”

Magubane, a driver, said he is unable to work because of the bandages on his hands.

Police were contacted for comment, but none was received at the time of going to press.
