Jail time for Umkomaas bank fraudster

The public is urged to report such cases.

The Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court sentenced Jubalani Zulu to two years’ imprisonment after he was found guilty of fraud.

On October 21 last year, at about 15:00 on a Tuesday afternoon, a case of fraud was reported by a local bank.

Reports indicate that Zulu had gone to open an account using fake documents, misrepresenting himself.

Investigations were then carried out by Detective Sergeant Prishan Maharaj of Umkomaas Saps, which led police to the correct owner of the documents who was from Johannesburg.

Zulu was arrested shortly after, and bail was opposed.

He was sentenced on February 25.

Police stated that there are numerous fraud cases registered for investigations at Umkomaas, and that the public should make every effort to report such cases.

Acting station commander Lieutenant Colonel Mthembeni Zungu praised Maharaj for his swift action and excellent investigations in the matter.

“Fraudsters will face the full arm of the law,” said Zungu.
