Poachers nabbed in marine protected area in Umkomaas
46 crayfish (including three berried females), 60 mussels and two line fish were confiscated.
On a routine night patrol in the Umkomaas marine protected area on March 19, Coastal Marine Task Force (CMTF) members successfully executed a coordinated anti-poaching operation.
This resulted in the interception of multiple offenders engaged in illegal harvesting activities within a designated “no take zone”.
At approximately one hour prior to full low tide, CMTF patrollers observed suspicious activity indicative of active poaching within the marine protected area.
Initial assessment suggested the presence of two suspects, however, continued surveillance revealed a total of eight individuals participating in illegal fishing operations.

CMTF together with Gladiator Security maintained land and aerial surveillance over a period of six hours. During this time, the team carefully monitored the suspects’ movements and coordinated a strategic interception plan.
CMTF, in collaboration with Gladiator and Umkomaas police, moved in and successfully intercepted all individuals involved.
On inspection, the following illegal catch was confiscated: 46 crayfish (including three berried females), 60 mussels and two line fish.

Further investigations confirmed multiple violations such as fishing within a no take zone of a marine protected area, possession of catch without valid fishing licenses, exceeding legal bag limits and possession of berried crayfish (protected species).
Four suspects were issued with an official warning and another four were charged at Umkomaas Saps by the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment officials.
CMTF extends its appreciation to all role-players involved in the success of this operation. This also includes Bravo Security for its assistance with surveillance.
CMTF stated that this operation highlights the effectiveness of coordinated enforcement efforts and reinforces the ongoing commitment of all stakeholders to protecting marine resources within the Umkomaas marine protected area.
